Phillies put OF Geoff Jenkins on disabled list

The Phillies placed outfielder Geoff Jenkins on the 15-day disabled list Saturday with a strained right hip flexor and purchased infielder Andy Tracy’s contract from Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

Jenkins, who has never played in the postseason, injured his hip while beating out an infield single in the third inning Friday night against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Philadelphia is in a tight race with the New York Mets for the NL East title.

‘Yeah, I’m concerned. It’s frustrating for me because I came here to be part of a winner, and like anybody else you want to be part of that,’ Jenkins said. ‘So, there’s frustration there, but I’ll try to do my best. I know they want me to rest a little bit before we start being aggressive as far as rehab or anything.’

Berkman, Backe lead Astros in win over Mets

So much for the notion that it’s best not to dwell on a bad start.

Despite throwing a gem in Houston’s 8-3 victory over the New York Mets on Saturday night, Brandon Backe stood in front of his locker in the Astros clubhouse beating himself up.

‘I’ve got a long way to go to redeem myself,’ he said. ‘I’m not going to sit on a good start and say things are better. I’m proud of this start and I’m going to take the positives to my next start, but I’m not totally redeemed.’

Nevertheless, Backe rebounded from an awful performance last week to shut down surging New York, and the Astros got a three-run homer from Lance Berkman in their 8-3 victory.
